The genre “Battle Royale” is not old yet. But the market is already fiercely contested – regularly new games from the genre are announced. That’s why we’re launching 15 Battle Royale games that must survive in our bloody arena.
The last-man-standing principle is not unknown. Several players are sent to an arena and have to fight each other to the death. Mostly the player starts without weapons or equipment and may either look for it laboriously or make it himself. The last player to survive wins. Most games of this genre are available for the PC. Here you can also find many free ones among them. But there are also Battle Royale games on PS4, Xbox One and even the Nintendo Switch. Okay, for the latter so far only one game has been announced. But we can hope!
The history of the genre “Battle Royale”
When the Japanese film Battle Royale was released in 2000 with a brilliant Takeshi Kitano in the lead role, the world was shocked and amused alike. The strip laid the foundation for the video game genre. The plot is simple: A school class is stunned on a supposed school trip and wakes up in an arena . They should kill each other until only one survives.
With the film as a basis, a few video games have been released recently, which have adapted some key features from the film. For example, the teacher mentions danger zones where students are not allowed to move, otherwise they die. In Battle Royale games, there are similar mechanics, for example, by poison gas or invisible walls brought about. If a certain time runs out, the arena becomes smaller, on which the fighters must compete.
Out of the series – PUBG, H1Z1, Fortnite and The Culling
In our “Arena” the most famous representatives of the genre are not listed. But you still deserve a place in this article. But since they are the most important titles in the Battle Royale genre, we do not need to introduce them separately. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is probably the most famous representative of the genre. Since March 2017 , it has mastered the Steam and Twitch charts. Up to 100 players fight in this arena. They are looking for weapons and equipment and can improve their equipment with essays. A swirling wall reduces the area regularly.
Fortnite only received the PvP mode in September 2017. It all started with the PvE Zombie Slaughter Mode “Save the World”. Epic Games developed the Battle Royale mode within 2 months and released it for free on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Meanwhile, you can even play the game on the phone.
In February 2016 appeared H1Z1: King of the Kill (KotK). Here, over 150 people play together and fight until one survives. This regularly releases poisonous gas, which reduces the size of the arena. The arsenal is limited. It is much faster than PUBG. Meanwhile, there are also eSports competitions around KotK. One month later, The Culling was released. The game is more oriented towards the movie, because here you are on an island. A total of 15 candidates compete against each other. They make weapons or find them. They can also build traps and trick other players.
